Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month—a month dedicated to spreading awareness for keeping motorcyclists safe. If you are a motorcycle owner in Kentucky and drive it frequently, you may face a variety of risks and dangerous situations while you’re out on the road. It’s essential to take the right precautions when you’re riding your bike out on the roads in Fort Campbell to ensure the safety and protection of you and your motorcycle.

What Should I Do Before I Drive a Motorcycle?
As of Dec. 31, 2021, there were just under 100,000 legally registered motorcyclists in the state of Kentucky. If you plan on purchasing a motorcycle or driving one for an extended period of time, it’s essential to consider taking a rider and education course. In doing so, you can learn more about the potential risks and hazards while you’re out on the road, especially regarding risk factors with other drivers you share the road with. Taking such a course can help protect yourself and other drivers. man driving Motorcycle

  • Wear safety gear. Wearing a helmet while you’re driving your motorcycle is essential for your safety and can hinder damage to your head if you’re involved in an accident.

  • Stay in your lane. Ensuring you’re doing your part on the road by staying in one lane and not weaving into other lanes while you’re driving can help you stay safe while driving.

  • Give yourself space. Creating a comfortable amount of space between you and other vehicle operators will give you the space you need to operate your vehicle safely.

  • Drive with caution. Driving slow and steady is a great way to prevent any unforeseen accidents from occurring with other drivers and other unfortunate scenarios.

  • Always check twice. Before changing lanes, check twice to make sure there are no vehicles you’re in danger of colliding with.

Another essential item of note while driving your motorcycle is to be aware of your surroundings. Accidents commonly occur for no foreseen reason at all. Watching for other drivers, the weather and other factors is an excellent way to ensure you’re doing your part to keep Fort Campbell roads safe.
